"What they don’t tell you about childbirth is how goddamned scary it is. It’s scary the same way women’s bodies are scary, because they’re capable of holding something else inside them and suddenly your wife isn’t your wife anymore but two people, one the woman you know and the other a tiny thing you can’t see. It’s scary the whole time she’s pregnant because you watch her changing, the visible signs of her insides shifting, and you’re afraid she’s going to crack right down the middle of the cocoon of her body. You’re scared only one body is going to crawl out of the cocoon, because it doesn’t seem like there’s room enough for both. You’re terrified because you don’t know which body you want it to be."
